Equity Upward is a minority-owned, California-based, unapologetic and fearless antiracist and narrative change-focused strategic media planner and buyer. We are humble when we say we know communities. We are humble when we say we know the markets. We build strategies that get results.
We specialize in radio, print, television, digital, and community-based guerilla marketing. We connect with diverse dreams and experiences of today’s Californians. Across Highway 99 and the 5 or heading along the 80 or the 15, microcultures of California have their own stories, narratives, and deep mythologies that are uniquely transadapted within cultures yet transverse across communities. These are the deep narratives we seek to affirm, connect, and build a base story of empowerment.
We are equity-driven, budget-conscious, and impact-orientated with a history of results and deep-seated partnerships. We believe in relationships, not transactions. We are not profit-driven, but rather informed by our values of social justice, racial justice, and community-driven change.
Gurjit Singh is founder and principal of Equity Upward. Raised in the Bay Area, he has previous experience at various community nonprofits with deep linkages in the Central Valley, Southern California, and across California. He has been working with community BIPOC ethnic media outlets since the age of 15, when he got his first job as a graphic designer for the largest Punjabi language newspaper in the country.
Gurjit is inspired by working with marginalized communities to develop strategic outcomes that build power and create narrative change. He serves as chief strategist, creative, and media buyer drawing from his wealth of experience and deep relationships with linguistic groups, local communities, and micro-cultures that others ignore and neglect. He has a commitment towards and is building with coalitions for a new vision of California.
